Dr. Robert Korol : Lifetime Achievement Award – 1998

Dr. Robert Korol, Professor Emeritus in Civil Engineering at McMaster, is being recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Meritorious Service to the Community in the Protection of the Environment for his missionary zeal in pursuing sustainability at McMaster, in Hamilton-Wentworth and globally.

He has been instrumental in shaping the university’s engineering courses in environmental sustainability.He helped found and lead the Engineer and Society program which creates a stream of engineers conscious of environmental issues. Bob has also travelled repeatedly to China and Pakistan to provide advice on integrating sustainability into the curricula and professional projects.

Bob served on the Vision 2020 task force and subsequently established Citizens for Sustainability to work for the implementation of the resulting plans. He is a significant spokesperson on environmental issues in the community who speaks out at public meetings, writes letters to politicians and works quietly behind the scenes advising and guiding others.

Bob’s commitment to the environment is evident in everything he does. He leads by example, not just in talking about sustainability, but in living it.
